being held has ruled that the two suspects should be freed on bail as they have completed 18 months in custody. Both men have

been barred from leaving the central Greek town and will have to report to the local police station regularly until a verdict is delivered.

They have been on trial – Korkoneas for shooting Grigoropoulos, Saraliotis for being an accomplice – since February.

The Italian media repeat the same refrain: your life is under threat, you must be scared. The ideology of security places all of us in a world of ghosts. Punks, foreigners, vandal kids are other actors in this comedy of horror. Journalists recruited by various bosses instil the fear of the diverse and encourage the lynching of the poor. The victims of this murderous ideology follow one another like in a war bulletin: extremely overcrowded jails, murders committed by cops, torture in police stations, detention camps for immigrants, fascist aggressions. No surprise, then, if the journalists of capital yell the need for security and their desire for cameras in every street and soldiers in every piazza.

It is them, the bosses, who need security. This rotten society, where millions of people do not even have the certainty to make ends meet, generates anger against the responsible of the generalized disaster: politicians and capitalists. Social control, therefore, is the last resource left to this totalitarian democracy in the hands of multinationals. There’s nothing else they can offer.

Rightwing politicians invoke the use of truncheons, whereas the leftists make appeal to an abstract legality. On the one hand, businessmen and administrators ‘s financial crimes are tolerated; on the other, there is no mercy towards all the poor and undesirable, “criminals” guilty of passing a border without documents, of occupying empty buildings, of selling counterfeit goods. And sometimes – which is even worse! – guilty of organising themselves in order to struggle against the arrogance of the powerful engaged in a total war on everything that smells freedom and life.

As a consequence, the gang of the PD [the major centre-left political party] in Florence threaten the eviction of all occupied spaces and call upon the police to suppress all those passionate people who cannot resign to the dirty games of power, such as the clearance sale of public spaces, the eco-devastation aimed at high speed railway projects, the construction of a new immigration detention centre. Great transformations and huge interests, which need the elimination of the poor, the subversive and the angry people. On July 1 2010, in Florence, a jury will decide whether to charge with conspiracy (subversive association) some of these angry people.

Accused of committing a series of actions, occupation of buildings and non-authorized demonstrations, 19 anarchist comrades risk a trial based on the anti-terrorism law: the infamous article 270bis of the Italian penal code, which has allowed the State to lock up its sworn enemies on a number of occasions.

Beyond penal codes, tribunals and laws created to divide, criminalize and dominate the exploited, we re-confirm what we have always said: the real terrorists are those who terrorise in order to preserve power and profit.

Prison is much more than fours walls of the a vile institution; prison as a condition is reflected and reproduced in the world that surrounds us.

It is the cameras on every street corner surveilling our comings and goings; it is the DNA and fingerprint databanks that record our most personal details; it is the borders and constant threat of detention and deportation that would keep us from freely choosing where we want to live.

To Sodexo (and all others that contribute to the upkeep and functioning of prisons) we say screw you and your choice of ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, when what we really want is to burn the prisons to the ground.

About activism in Bulgaria - May 2010

We received an e-mail asking about the situation in Bulgaria. So we will use a recent protest as an example for it.

First Bulgaria is not Greece although they are neighbours. It is sad to say but no matter how hard situation is most people in Bulgaria do not take to the streets. There are different explanations about this. Some claim the bolshevik regime is to blame. Bolsheviks ruled Bulgaria between 1944 and 1989 and they rule it with iron fist. A lot of older bulgarians still remember it and are afraid to protest. Young people are not afraid as most of them were still not born in that time but they are brainwashed by capitalist propaganda. A lot of young people believe that all left movements are bad and hypocritical like bolsheviks and the only solution is market economy and western-type of "democracy". Also most of nowadays politicians, policemen and businessmen are the same that ruled before 1989 and they surely know how to break any dangerous social movement from the inside.

The global economic crisis hit Bulgaria almost as hard as Greece. The government started to cut social fundings, fundings for health care and education. They announced that they are going to cut fundings for Bulgarian Academy of Science and University of Sofia with 25%. So a protest against this was organized on 11 May 2010. Some hundreds people gathered in front of the University. A small group of anarchist students were also present with their own banner. But organizers of the protest send university guards tried to push them out of the protest. And who were the organizers ? They were persons close to the government, the university administration and official student organizations. This is not the first cut for the education - before some months government reduced education budget. No one from the organizers protested then. But we have already seen this trick. Government tell them to protest now so the government may say something like this "Ok, we will not cut 25% of the money, we will cut only 10%". And the "organizers" will declare victory - "We prevent the big cut of 25%, they will only cut 10%". That is why they hate anarchists and everyone who can think independently - because we can see their dirty tricks.

It is not a big deal that the fuckers tried to push anarchists out of the protest (they actually failed). Much more big treat is the behaviour of some other activists. Most of the student organizations are "official", they are approved by the power. There are only one informal grass-root organization. It is small and there are a lot of young communists in it but still it is an anternative. But after the protest of 11 may they blamed anarchists too. They said "this is not the right way anarchists should protest" (sic). Why do they act like this ? Maybe they are so ideologically blind that they believe a big protest with brainwashed people is better than a small protest with independently thinking people. Or...they are used by someone else ? As we say cops and politicians know very well how to break any social movement from inside.

It seems for now that the only things that the power cannot cope with are small individual acts of rage against the system. That is why stealing from work, vandalizing buildings, small sabotages and "madman acts" are so popular in Bulgaria. If you act alone or with some trusted friends there are no one who can betray you. At that moment in Bulgaria this is the only form of resistance that matters.

Policemen attacked Greece 04/5

A group of policemen were set upon by around 45 villagers in Anogeia, Crete, yesterday when they burst into a house in the area to investigate the source of gunshots heard. The villagers beat the policemen, using sticks and iron bars, leaving some of the officers with significant injuries. The assailants fled after the scuffles but police said that at least six of them are known offenders and would be traced.

According to media reports, before and during a solidarity demonstration for S. Seisidis more arrests and controls were made.
Meanwhile, the Initiative for Prisoners' Rights, in a statement entitled "The rights of Simos Seisidis are no less than others", calls the doctors responsible for his life to do this properly and to do what is required by medical ethics, unaffected, as required, by police terrorist scenarios and suggestions.

Residents clash with police, hijack buses in Mexico's Tepito barrio

Scores of residents in the tough Tepito neighborhood of downtown Mexico City clashed with riot police Tuesday night in a chaotic brawl sparked by unconfirmed reports of child kidnappings. The crowds, mostly young men and boys, many with their faces covered, threw stones and crude Molotov cocktails at police in several sections of the infamous barrio, at El Universal.
Elsewhere in the area, a crowd of young people identified as being from Tepito stopped and carjacked an empty city tour bus. The bright red Turibus double-deckers, decorated with images of major landmarks in Mexico City, are fixtures in traveler-friendly districts of the capital. The hijacking mob rode around downtown, packed inside the double-decker, which was not carrying paid passengers, before police were able to take control of the vehicle and make dozens of arrests.
Two other municipal buses were also reported being taken over by crowds in Tepito. A total of 77 people -- 31 of them under 18 years of age -- were detained and still being processed on Wednesday, authorities said in a statement. As many as 700 police officers participated in the operations Tuesday night.
The confrontations began after Tepito residents blocked a major intersection in protest over what they say is a rash of kidnappings of toddlers and small children that is spreading fear through their neighborhood's choked streets. But the police say the initial case was based on a false report, and are now seeking to detain a father for possibly lying to authorities. On Wednesday afternoon, the daily Reforma reported that the mother of the supposedly abducted children confessed the story is untrue. The two toddlers are safe, police told the paper.
The residents of Tepito, however, remain convinced that kids are being snatched.

Police hold man suspected of shooting dead judge in courthouse

The shooting took place yesterday in a Brussels courthouse and the gunman fled on foot, setting off a manhunt in the Belgian capital.

Police said today that they had detained a man in a park after the shooting and recovered a weapon. They did not release details about his identity.

The victims in Thursday's shooting were identified as Judge Isabelle Brandon and her clerk Andre Bellemans.

They were shot at the end of a hearing and the gunman then fled from the courthouse.

"We are heart-sick and outraged about the brutal attack launched by the Israeli Military on the Free Gaza Movement's flotilla of boats," Cindy and Craig Corrie said in a statement. "The boats were carrying civilian passengers and humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza Strip, and were clearly in international waters when this illegal attack occurred, in violation of international law," they said. The number of dead and injured are still unconfirmed, but lowest figures reported are nine killed and 34 injured. Israel has not released their names. Over 700 citizens from nearly 40 countries were on board.

EMERGENCY demonstrations were called in at least fourteen Greek cities last night, after the atrocious attack by Israeli commandos on the Free Gaza ships, reports From The Greek Streets.

In Athens, the Greek government, otherwise “quick to condemn” the attacks, had no hesitation in preempting an attack on those who gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Athens.

Riot police guarding the embassy, according to eye-witnesses, were in full gear and fully masked up before the demonstration had started: the attack on the demonstration that followed was planned.

Most of the Greek activists who were on board have landed in Athens this morning. Michalis Grigoropoulos, a sailor on the ship “Free Mediterranean” stated the following at Athens airport:

“You know, of course, that we had a pirate attack against us. What I want to tell you, is that comrades from our Incentive have been tortured. I refused to sign any document and was deported against my will. I was put in isolation.

"I denounce the Zionist state for yet another crime against humanity. We saw from afar the onslaught by the commandos of the Zionist army on the Turkish ship of the Freedom Flotilla.

"I denounce the Greek government, which left the Greek ships and the Greek citizens unprotected. A huge popular movement must now be formed, which will demand the release of all hostages and the return of our ships. Solidarity to the Palestinian People must grow. Palestinian Resistance must win, and it shall win.

Meanwhile, in his blog The Cutting Edge, author Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed writes: "Many of those activists being shot at while they slept, didn't wake up.

"Many of those that did wake up, woke up bleeding and wounded. Many tried to defend themselves in whatever way they could, obviously terrorising their commando-attacks even more, unleashing further bloodshed.

"Under Netanyahu, the IDF has become increasingly unhinged. Utterly incapable of grasping that its war crimes and crimes against humanity can no longer simply be dressed up as a fight against terrorists, when terror itself is a primary instrument of statecraft.

ATHENS, Greece, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Greek officials say they are offering a reward of $887,000 for information leading to the arrest of the "robbers in black." Michalis Chrysochoidis, the newly appointed citizens' protection minister, told reporters Tuesday the robbers, identified as brothers Simeon and Marios Seisidis and Grigoris Tsironis, are wanted not only for a 2006 bank robbery but for possible links to anarchist groups accused of domestic terrorism, the Athens newspaper Kathimerini reported.

The reward offer comes days after Chrysochoidis called for the reopening of the investigation of the November 17 anarchist group, some of whose suspected have been serving long jail sentences since it was broken up in 2002, the newspaper said. The government says domestic terror groups in Greece are making a comeback.

Sources told Kathimerini forensic evidence has linked one of the "robbers in black" with a 2007 attack on a former judge's private guard and to a later shooting at an Athens police station claimed by the group Revolutionary Struggle.

US citizen Emily Henochowicz was shot directly in the face with a tear gas canister as she non-violently demonstrated against the Flotilla massacre

(JERUSALEM ISM) - An American solidarity activist was shot in the face with a tear gas canister during a demonstration in Qalandiya, today. Emily Henochowicz is currently in Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem undergoing surgery to remove her left eye, following the demonstration that was held in protest to Israel’s murder of at least 10 civilians aboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in international waters this morning.

21-year old Emily Henochowicz was hit in the face with a tear gas projectile fired directly at her by an Israeli soldier during the demonstration at Qalandiya checkpoint today. Israeli occupation forces fired volleys of tear gas at unarmed Palestinian and international protesters, causing mass panic amongst the demonstrators and those queuing at the largest checkpoint separating the West Bank and Israel.

“They clearly saw us,” said Sören Johanssen, a Swedish ISM volunteer standing with Henochowicz. “They clearly saw that we were internationals and it really looked as though they were trying to hit us. They fired many canisters at us in rapid succession. One landed on either side of Emily, then the third one hit her in the face.”

Henochowicz is an art student at the prestigious Cooper Union, located in East Village, Manhattan.

Henochowicz lost her left eye after being shot directly in the face with a tear gas canister. Israeli soldiers are allowed to do this, even encouraged.

The demonstration was one of many that took place across the West Bank today in outrage over the Israeli military’s attack on the Gaza freedom flotilla and blatant violation of international law. Demonstrations also took place in inside Israel, Gaza and Jerusalem, with clashes occurring in East Jerusalem and Palestinian shopkeepers in the occupied Old City closing their businesses for the day in protest.

Tear gas canisters are commonly used against demonstrators in the occupied West Bank. In May 2009, the Israeli State Attorney’s Office ordered Israeli Police to review its guidelines for dispersing demonstrators, following the death of a demonstrator, Bassem Abu Rahmah from Bil’in village, caused by a high velocity tear-gas projectile. Tear-gas canisters are meant to be used as a means of crowd dispersal, to be shot indirectly at demonstrators and from a distance. However, Israeli forces frequently shoot canisters directly at protesters and are not bound by a particular distance from which they can shoot.

Israeli occupation forces boarded the Mavi Marmara, one of six ships on the Freedom Flotilla at 5 a.m. this morning, opening fire on the hundreds of unarmed civilians aboard. No-one aboard the ships were carrying weapons of any kind, including for defense against a feared Israeli attack in international waters. At least 9 aid workers aboard the ship have been confirmed dead, with dozens more injured. The assault took place 70 miles off the Gaza coast in international waters, after the flotilla was surrounded by three Israeli warships. The Freedom Flotilla, carrying 700 human rights activists from over 40 countries and 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid, was headed for the besieged and impoverished Gaza Strip. The Israeli blockade on Gaza, combined with the illegal buffer zone, has put a stranglehold on the territory. 42% of Gazans are unemployed, and food insecurity hovers around 60% according to figures from the Palestine Centre for Human Rights.

Flag vandalism on Memorial Day -- USA

From Oregon to Minnesota to Ohio, vandals trampled on Old Glory over the Memorial Day weekend. In one Ohio town alone, approximately 25 American flags were found set ablaze on Monday.



At least one national veterans group called for those responsible for the "shocking and reprehensible" acts of vandalism to be quickly arrested and prosecuted.

Police in Wooster, Ohio, were going door-to-door early Tuesday in search of the people who torched roughly 25 flags and flagpoles along Saunders Drive and Morgan Street, Capt. John Quicci said.

"They were set on fire," Quicci told FoxNews.com, adding that an investigation is ongoing.

No suspects or motives had been identified, according to Quicci, who was unable to estimate damages to the 3-by-5-foot flags and the 10-foot metal poles placed outside of residents' homes by the annual Wooster Rotary Parade of Flags project.

The people who torched the flags face charges of criminal damaging and arson, Quicci said.

"We're treating this very seriously," he said.

In Minneapolis, a fire was set late last week to an American flag hanging outside a Marine veteran's home. The residence was spared and no injuries were reported, but the flag was destroyed.

Elizabeth Hawley said she found the ashes Thursday morning and called the act "very disturbing." She said her husband is keeping his feelings reserved, but she knows he's upset.

Hawley told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that she thinks the flag-burning was a random act of vandalism.

In Portland, Ore., Christian Ashby and his wife awoke Sunday to find their American flag torn down, covered in obscenities and burned outside their home, KPTV.com reported. Flying the flag has special meaning to his family, Ashby said.

"Well, we have some close relatives, especially my wife, who had a cousin who suffered from [post-traumatic stress disorder] and took his own life," Ashby told the website. "So, we have some very dedicated family to veterans of the United States services. So, it means a lot to us to fly the flag."

Ashby said a local man who served two tours in Vietnam loaned him another flag after posting news of the vandalism online.

Ryan Gallucci, a spokesman for AMVETS, a national organization representing 200,000 veterans, said he found the acts of vandalism "shocking and reprehensible," particularly on Memorial Day weekend.

"We absolutely condemn it," Gallucci told FoxNews.com. "Memorial Day is one of our country's most significant holidays and a chance to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. For someone to desecrate the American flag on Memorial Day, it's unconscionable, it's unforgivable."

Gallucci called for quick closure to the ongoing investigations in at least three states.

"The people who are responsible for this need to be apprehended and held accountable for their actions," he said. "We shouldn't tolerate it, regardless of what the excuse is. We need to get to the bottom of it."

Brazilian police killing at `alarming rates,’ U.N. expert says

GENEVA Brazil’s police continue to kill too many people, while citizens in poor areas live in the shadow of gang violence, a United Nations human rights expert said Tuesday.

“Daily life for too many Brazilians, especially those living in favelas, is still lived in the shadow of killings and violence by gangs, militias, death squads and the police,” according to Philip Alston, the U.N.’s independent expert on extrajudicial executions.

Alston said this was taking place “despite important reforms by the government” and praised Brasilia for “its cooperation and openness to external scrutiny.”

The expert was conducting a follow-up report to a 2007 investigation into killings in Brazil.

He said that since his visit about three years ago, “the situation on the ground has not changed dramatically.”

Between 2003 and 2009, some 11,000 people were killed by police in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in so-called “resistance killings,” a term used by law enforcement officials when referring to acts of self defence.

“The evidence clearly shows that many of these killings were actually executions. But the police at the scene label them resistance killings, and they are almost never seriously investigated,” Alston charged.

For a new life, for total liberation.

On May 24, there was a new hearing in the Seventh Court of Warrants. Its purpose was the reformalization of our charges in light of the lengthy investigation into the Security Bank robbery and subsequent confrontation in which a uniformed police officer died.

During the hearing, prosecutor Andrés Montes (son of former Popular Unitary Action Movement and now Socialist Party deputy Carlos Montes) gave a brief presentation specifying—according to his “detailed investigation”—the exact roles we played in two armed robberies: the Banco Santander robbery in Valparaíso and the aforementioned Security Bank robbery, which occurred in September and October 2007 respectively.

Additionally, the investigation period was extended for another 45 days due to the lack of expert witnesses regarding DNA samples.

In short, more of the same, obviously focused on justifying an endless, flimsy investigation to which—as we have already pointed out—we have nothing to say, nothing to declare, nothing to contribute other than our boundless, conscious hatred of one of the most spurious expressions of capital: its juridical-penitentiary framework, its rudiments of justice, its shitty democracy.

Although they have attempted to hide the political nature of our criminalization, it’s clear that said criminalization will be expressed in a verdict that is a mere formality. The moment this witch-hunt began, the decision was made to end it with our bodies in the cemetery, not in prison.

As a proletarian in revolt, I feel it has been essential to confront the daily process of imprisonment and its incarnations with that vital, indestructible connection to those who keep the subversive flame burning in a constant struggle to destroy everything that oppresses us.

While some sustain neverending discussions about methods of action, interpreting and understanding revolutionary violence, concepts and terminology, or the genuine representation of such-and-such idea, tendency, or position, the reality of the social war speaks for itself day after day in prisons and towns, in the fields and the hills, among the persecuted and exploited around the world. That’s why I now want to salute, with special affection and an intimate, brotherly, and complicit embrace:

• The comrades arrested at the end of April in Buenos Aires while participating in an international solidarity demonstration outside the Greek embassy. I have first-hand knowledge of these dear brothers and sisters’ generous solidarity. At times like these, the strength of one’s convictions becomes the fundamental support in resisting the complex, difficult Buenos Aires prison experience. In any case, know that you are not alone, ever! Never alone!!

• Comrade Estela Cortez, also arrested at the end of April in Antofagasta, in the extreme north of Chile. Almost one month after a repressive attack launched against The Spider Occupied Social Center on the eve of the Day of the Young Combatant, our comrade was arrested and charged with several attacks on military installations and right-wing party offices. Clearly, the authorities’ accusations can in no way interfere when it comes to building complicit solidarity with our class brothers and sisters, with our comrades in struggle. Be strong, Estela!!
• Waikalaf Cadin Calfunao, arrested two weeks ago near Temuco in southern Chile, charged with possession of high-powered explosive material. This peñi is already familiar with the Chilean state’s prisons. Added to his long service in the war, that constitutes the potent, accumulated experience needed to resist the day-to-day behind the state/prison/capital’s walls. Whether it’s persecution, a set-up, or the fleeting circumstances of a conscious decision: Peñi, Kiñe Newen Tüin!!

I also salute each comrade who has returned to the streets over these past few months after being imprisoned for different reasons, all of them linked to the search for total liberation. To Keny, Elena, Flora, Cristian, Pablo, Matías. To the gifted Sergio and Marcelo. Let’s hope you don’t forget your days “on the inside,” and that they are a motivation to continue, not a justification to renounce the desire and the need to be free.

Memory is perhaps one of the most subversive weapons when it comes to constructing identity, creating a community of ideas, building class consciousness, and deciding on proletarian struggle. That’s why the constant challenge is to keep it alive.
