Lucca, Italy - anarchist comrade Leo Landi sentenced to 6 years

culmine   translate    /sysiphus-angrynewsfromaroundtheworld.blogspot.com/2010/07/lucca-italy-anarchist-comrade-leo-landi.html

21/07/2010 - Yesterday July 20 last day of Leo's trial took place in Lucca.
The public prosecutor requested 6 years for robbery 'with the aggravation of terrorism'. The court however, excluded the aggravation but confirmed the sentence of 6 years imprisonment.
A long trial, a decision already decided, not just in the five minutes of deliberation that served the judges to decide, but for the repressive atmosphere that has characterized Tuscany for many years now and for the more general trend that sees power increasingly able to impose itself in trying to eliminate every enemy that stands more or less consciously in front of it.
It inevitably makes us angry to know that Leo will remain in jail, not surprised that they wanted to charge him with being an anarchist, to have always carried forward his ideas with pride, struggles with determination, his love of freedom in practice.
Very often we have had to speak out about and deal with repression when we would rather be devoting our energies to struggles without "chasing" the deadlines that were "imposed".
But these years have made us think much about what was and is fundamental active and concrete solidarity to comrades and companions, especially if they are imprisoned.
They, in fact, are made to pay the price of a declared war against unacceptable reality.
We support them and still prefer the attack on the enemy to the sterile whining about its ugliness. We prefer not stop powerless in the face of obstacles we encounter in our path, but to find a way to overcome them.
Freedom is not begged it is conquered!
When they hit one of us they mean all of us!
The anger is not subsiding, minds and hearts to Leo.

Anarchist Leonardo Landi arrested (Italy)

Italian police have arrested an anarchist wanted for suspected involvement in “terrorist activities” near the border with France, police told AFP (Mainstream Press Association) Thursday November 05.

Leonardo Landi was arrested in Ventimiglia because of a close collaboration with the French police, said Paolo Fanzone, head of the investigation at Imperia police headquarters in the north.
The Florentine anarchist militant had been on the run since May 2008. At the time of his arrest, Landi was with a woman from La Spezia in the North, who police suspect is an accomplice.
Police said Landi, who was carrying dubious cards and documents, may have been planning an attack in the northwest coastal region of Liguria.
Landi was wanted for ‘criminal conspiracy linked to terrorist activities’ – Fanzone said.
According to ‘Police intelligence’, Landi has been implicated in many terrorist attacks, especially in the centre of Italy, and he represents a ‘danger’, given his ability to rally other people around his cause – the police added, saying the militant is currently being held in San Remo prison.
A warrant for Landi’s arrest was issued in May 2008 by authorities in Florence who accused him of participating in an armed attack on a post office in June 2007.

undefinedWe haven’t forgiven the death of Carlo Giuliani; an Italian activist born in 1978, he was one of millions of protesters who participated in the Genoa’s demos against the G8 leaders’ violence. Comrades had witnessed his assassination by Italian riot police’s Carabinieri in 20 July 2001.
After nine years, still no justice is served. Just this year, 2010, the case ‘Giuliani and Gaggio v. Italy’ was referred to the Court’s Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights. If you follow the link above, you’ll read the outraging summary description of so-called ‘Principal facts’, including: ‘As to the officer who had fired the fatal shot, the judge took the view that he had fired into the air without intent to kill and that he had in any event acted in self-defense in response to the violent attack on him and his colleagues (sequence of photos of the Giuliani’s mord here).
What does this remind us of? Statements made from Greek authorities in regard of the assassination of Alexis Grigoropoulos, which led to December 2008 Uprising in Greece. Alexis Kougias, the lawyer defending Epaminondas Korkoneas, the police special guard who shot dead the teenager in Exarchia, central Athens, in 6 December 2008, argued in court that the fatal bullet was fired into the air and not toward the victim.

Italy - June 23 - In the prison of town Rovereto, Trentino, there were demonstrations against the overcrowding in the prison

. There are 100 prisoners but there is place for 51 people. About 100 anarchists gathered beside the prison, started with loud music, and shouted slogans against the government. Then, they wrote message on the wall and threw firecrackers in the yard of the prison. When the prisoners saw that anarchists support from outside, they began banging plates and pots against the bars of the cells about half an hour. This demo produced and reactions of certain institutions, prison union has confirmed overcrowding and called for increasing security for the people who work in prison. Secretary general of the Independent Police Review Prison has described the event and invited to use the military to achieve the external security of prisons.
June 26 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, there will be noise demonstration in the Northwest Detention Center (1623 East J Street, Tacoma, WA, USA). The reasons for the protest can be found here, in short, people protest against private for-profit prison industry, against the mass detention of immigrants with the aim of expelling, number of detained people increased from 18 000 to 26 000 which has an impact on the lives of their children too.

Comacchio (Ferrara): TSO [compulsory psychiatric treatment] and teargas

This communiqué, written by anarchists from Ferrara (northern Italy), exposes an appalling episode that occurred in Comacchio, a town in the province of Ferrara. Apparently just a provincial story, but one that reminds us of the unacceptable conditions imposed by this murderous system, a story that concerns all of us.

Psychiatry makes recourse to more and more terrible means to take away the freedom of those whom it considers deviant according to its biased vision of ‘normality’.

On May 28 2010, in a lively town in the province of Ferrara, where a reactionary rightwing mayor has just been elected, a 34-year-old man was subjected to the hideous activity of psychiatric doctors and of their best mates in uniform (police and carabinieri).

All started when police was alerted that a man had entered a church and started swearing during the mass. Eventually the man went outside a bar, where he exhibited in martial arts postures. This is what the local press reported, as it depicted the man as ‘a public danger, someone to be scared of’.

A couple of cops arrived at the bar to inform the man that he had to be submitted to a TSO (a compulsory psychiatric treatment), which had been authorized by his GP and by the mayor on the same morning. The man had already gone through a TSO in the past and had lost his job as beach-attendant for this reason. As he still had a vivid memory of the suffering endured during his experience in the hands of psychiatrists, he reacted angrily and started hitting the cops, causing a jaw injury to a female officer. The cops tried to immobilise him with some pepper spray but the man managed to escape and reached his house, where he barricaded himself for about 25 hours. The forces of order set up a siege around the house and the adjacent streets, with a massive deployment of military, fire brigade and Red Cross operators (all this because the man had entered a church swearing and had exhibited some karate postures outside a bar!). Water, gas and electricity supplies were cut off during the entire period of the siege.

As he realized that the man was about to surrender, the local carabinieri chief gave his special units the order to storm the house by smashing the door and by making use of teargas. The man was then immobilised, sedated, arrested and taken to a psychiatric institute, where he was administered psychotropic drugs and kept under strict surveillance for a few days, until a judge confirmed his arrest in the psychiatric institute.

As oriental swords were found in the man’s house, because of his passion for martial arts, the judge may charge him with ‘dangerous antisocial behaviour’, which will lead to him being locked up in a judicial psychiatric hospital. Moreover, the man was charged with assaulting the female police officer as he tried to escape arrest. Needless to say, no mention was made of the injuries he was inflicted by the cops when they stormed his house.

Various journalists servants of power have wondered, through their shit papers, why the man reacted so violently in front of the possibility of a compulsory sanitary treatment. We would like to remind them why.

The compulsory sanitary treatment (or TSO) is a perverse mechanism, which denies ‘patients’ all chances to refuse it. It is a unique case in the field of that science called medicine, where any kind of treatment should be administered with the patient’s consent and interrupted whenever the latter decides to do so. Such possibility is not valid for that pseudo-science called psychiatry, whose aim is not the well-being of ‘patients’ (imaginary patients) but the classification of behaviours and thoughts considered abnormal, bizarre, strange or simply odd. Hence the invention of a series of mental diseases, which have never been demonstrated, and which serve only to justify the intrusion of psychiatric prejudice in the individual sphere of people.

In other words, when psychiatrists consider you as ‘unable to understand and decide’ they take the right to harm you… for your well-being of course.

It is sufficient to visit whatever psychiatric structure, be it a hospital ward or other kinds of institutes, to get an idea of the ‘cure’ as intended by psychiatry: straitjackets, psychotropic drugs that turn people into zombies, injections of drugs whose effect can last for an entire month without the possibility to interrupt it owing to unpleasant side effects, rigid timetables, aseptic rooms where you can’t do absolutely anything, at times total reclusion and at other times a few hours outside the room under the escort of white uniform staff. The places of psychiatry are alienating and only serve to lock up people, the cure being only a pretext.

That’s why we are against psychiatry and are on the side of all those who try to defend themselves from it at all costs.

That’s why we are against journalists and their shit articles that present a man swearing in a church as a danger for the community, someone to be scared of, someone to be sedated quickly in order to restore a pacific life that resembles passive obedience to the judicial and moral laws of dominion.

That’s why we are against the State and against all governments, which in Italy have been considering for years the possibility to reform psychiatric departments by conceding their management to the private sector and by reintroducing practices such as electroshock (which is still being used in some institutes).

Psychiatry cannot be reformed. It must be destroyed from its base, i.e. this society, where one day whoever jumps on a crane or on the roof of a factory after being dismissed will be labelled as a mad, as will anyone who protests at the social injustices produced by this economic system, which will keep on pouring the consequences of its crisis on those who are inexorably exploited.

Florence, Italy: on State’s terrorism and some subversive on trial.

The Italian media repeat the same refrain: your life is under threat, you must be scared. The ideology of security places all of us in a world of ghosts. Punks, foreigners, vandal kids are other actors in this comedy of horror. Journalists recruited by various bosses instil the fear of the diverse and encourage the lynching of the poor. The victims of this murderous ideology follow one another like in a war bulletin: extremely overcrowded jails, murders committed by cops, torture in police stations, detention camps for immigrants, fascist aggressions. No surprise, then, if the journalists of capital yell the need for security and their desire for cameras in every street and soldiers in every piazza.

It is them, the bosses, who need security. This rotten society, where millions of people do not even have the certainty to make ends meet, generates anger against the responsible of the generalized disaster: politicians and capitalists. Social control, therefore, is the last resource left to this totalitarian democracy in the hands of multinationals. There’s nothing else they can offer.

Rightwing politicians invoke the use of truncheons, whereas the leftists make appeal to an abstract legality. On the one hand, businessmen and administrators ‘s financial crimes are tolerated; on the other, there is no mercy towards all the poor and undesirable, “criminals” guilty of passing a border without documents, of occupying empty buildings, of selling counterfeit goods. And sometimes – which is even worse! – guilty of organising themselves in order to struggle against the arrogance of the powerful engaged in a total war on everything that smells freedom and life.

As a consequence, the gang of the PD [the major centre-left political party] in Florence threaten the eviction of all occupied spaces and call upon the police to suppress all those passionate people who cannot resign to the dirty games of power, such as the clearance sale of public spaces, the eco-devastation aimed at high speed railway projects, the construction of a new immigration detention centre. Great transformations and huge interests, which need the elimination of the poor, the subversive and the angry people. On July 1 2010, in Florence, a jury will decide whether to charge with conspiracy (subversive association) some of these angry people.

Accused of committing a series of actions, occupation of buildings and non-authorized demonstrations, 19 anarchist comrades risk a trial based on the anti-terrorism law: the infamous article 270bis of the Italian penal code, which has allowed the State to lock up its sworn enemies on a number of occasions.

Beyond penal codes, tribunals and laws created to divide, criminalize and dominate the exploited, we re-confirm what we have always said: the real terrorists are those who terrorise in order to preserve power and profit.

THE REAL TERRORIST IS THE CAPITAL, THE REAL TERRORIST IS THE STATE!

Italy: a GPS found under the truck of the Nunatak revue member

Police technology

May 17, under the van of an editor of Nunatak, we found a finde abbiamo trovato un bel transmitter with a SIM Vodaphone chip and 4 torch batteries, of 3,6 volts each, in series. All placed with a magnet behind a back wheel of the vehicle. This time, just not to boast, it should be said that it didn´t take much to notice that „someone“ had placed a device to spy on our movements. Moreover, for some time now, unfortunately, it is as well to take into consideration forms of technological control that is increasingly invasive and capillary. In fact, among all the manoeuvres and repressive attacks that the State puts into effect against those who still have the courage to raise their heads, this is just the latest sign that the review Nunatak has become object of attention of who knows which Procurator or investigative body. Monitoring, home visits and a whole series of other more or less concealed pressures have been gravitating for some time around the review and whoever collaborates with it with the intention of burning the earth around it and preparing an eventual repressive intervention in the near future. It seems pointless to us to stree once again that their „attention“ will not make us take one step back from our projects, but we can only admit that, for as long as uniforms and authority are concerned about our presence , of our way of thinking and acting, we have confirmation that we are moving in the right direction.

urin – 4 occupations searched, 3 people arrested and others to house arrest

T

Waiting for news, we communicate that, around 6am of the mourning, the digos (political police, ndt) has searched many occupations (Asilo, Barocchio, Mezcal, Askatasuna) and houses, arresting three people, notifing some house arrests (it seems they're 4 people) and to others, the requirement to sign in at the local police station. The repressive operation it's a revenge for the riots occurred on the first eviction of L'Ostile, the restricted measures are emaned by PM Rinaudo. There's a public assembly today afternoon at Mezcal Squat to organize future iniziatives.

For live updates listen to [also in streaming] Radio Blackout, 105.250FM in Turin.

Attestation of Asilo Squat:

At six of the mourning digos and forces of police came in front of Asilo Squat: “It's for a notification” they said to the occupant, that came after police intent to brake down the front door. In fact is not a simple notification, it's a search with arrest of one of the occupant, and we actually don't know why they arrest him, with what charges and without knowing if and when he will be released.

Police and digos have braked down many doors with hammers and metal bars, insulted and jostled the occupants, guilty of reluctance to open the door to the police.

Same searches are happening in Barocchio and Mezcal Squat, other two occupated places in Grugliasco and Collegno, and in private houses.

The hypothesis is that all the matter is about riots occurred at half december in Turin, followed the eviction of the occupated place L'Ostile.

While we write, the police is going out from Asilo, and in the meantime they're searching in Barocchio and Mezcal Squat.

Statement spread by www.tuttosquat.net:

Turin, 12nd may 2010

This mourning, at first light, the digos of Turin police headquarters have searched the occupated houses Asilo, Barocchio and Mezcal, the social centre Askatasuna and private houses. The scene is about the eviction of the occupated space L'Ostile in Corso Vercelli, happened the 10th december 2009.

The restrictive measures beats 16 friends: 3 arrested people, one lives at Asilo. 4 with the house arrest, of whom a boy and a girl living at Asilo Squat. 9 with the requirement to sign in at the local police station daily.

It's the time of clandestine posters, here is another: "Do like in Greece... rebel". It also carries the classic symbol of anarchy. This is the poster that was present this morning in via Perasso in Benevento, then immediately removed by the forces of order. With the classic symbol of anarchy the authors of the poster were solicited rebellion in the streets as in Greece in the culmination of a devastating social conflict. This manifesto is the latest of a production put up on the walls of the town. Sun, 09/05/2010 – 22:54

Ferrara, Italy. On the nth beating by the cops
How long will we still accept without reacting?
On February 24 2010 four immigrant kids are arrested in the centre of Ferrara [northern Italy] and taken to the carabinieri station of Via Del Campo. There the cops attack the kids furiously: it looks like the usual story of police brutality hidden behind the walls of a prison, the darkness of a neighbourhood in the night or, as in this case, the conspiracy of silence inside a police station.
This time, however, the carabinieri carry out their aggression in front of the cameras installed in the premises, and they don’t even take care to conceal the infamy they are committing.
The images (which can be seen on www.innocentievasioni.net and on www.italiarazzismo.it) show a carabiniere hitting one of the harmless boys with a truncheon gripped upside down in order to cause more pain; another cop pins another boy down while jumping on his back, which reminds us of the murder of Federico Aldrovandi, beaten to death by four pigs in uniform in the same city of Ferrara in 2005. This beating, captured by the cops’ cameras, takes place while other cops watch passively.
The four kids are held in the carabinieri station for hours and eventually accused of resistance to public official, according to the style of these pigs who first beat you and then denounce you.
A trial against the four boys will be held on May 11.
The fact that this is not an isolated episode but one of an infinite series is proved not only by the press reports that sporadically relate the most disgusting cases of police violence, notably when someone is killed by the men in uniform, but also by the widespread arrogance displayed by the military when they patrol and control the territory and the cities of this country in an escalation of abuse, violence and intimidation addressed especially against migrants. The massive presence of police and soldiers in many Italian urban centres serves to get us accustomed to all this.
From Aldrovandi to Cucchi, from Lonzi to Uva [all of them killed by the Italian police and carabinieri], from Carlo Giuliani to the many who ‘committed suicide’ in prison, from the migrants who gulp down blades and pieces of glass in protest at their imprisonment to those who die while escaping anti-immigration raids, we wonder how many will have to die before rage flows from the heart of people and pushes them to make the only right and wise decision: to revolt openly and incessantly against the apparatus of institutionalised violence, against the fascist structures and men of this State murderer.
To all those who celebrate May Day in these times of crisis, we suggest to have a look at Greece so that you can understand how the cops are never on the side of people but they are there to defend the interests of capitalists, multinationals and banks. There is nothing to celebrate. Quite the opposite.

Modena (Italy) : mass interrupted against detention centres

from cette semaine
11am mass
" They broke into the cathedral during the 11 o'clock mass : a group of young people with leaflets and megaphone protested against the detention centres for immigrants.
The reading of a passage from the New Testament was in course during the 11 o'clock mass in the cathedral, one of the most frequented of Modena. But at a certain moment a group of young people entered, megaphone in hand, and started to shout insults against Daniele Giovanardi and the La Misericordia association, that manage the detention centres of Modena and Bologna along with the police. "Giovanardi murderer" was one of the phrases thrown into the church, in front of all the dumbfounded worshippers who were present, and the stupor of the religious personnel. Then leaflets were thrown against the detention centres defined as concentration camps. In a few lines they said : "the confraternity of the Misericordia of Modena presided over by Daniele Giovanardi enriches itself on the backs of the imprisoned immigrants". And again : "Misericordia conceals behind its charitable facade a bloody business made of beatings, violence and abuse of power". (...). The group was rapidly chased from the cathedral, then dispersed in the streets of the town centre. A young girl was arrested by the police, she will be tried according to art. 405 of the penal code that condemns "the interruption of a religious service".

An anti-religion demonstration also took place in the centre of Lecce [southern Italy] on April 30, 2010 with an exhibition, leaflets, megaphone and discussions on sexuality, abortion, personal freedoms, obscurantism, and was broken up by riot cops.
