Update on Simos Seisidis situation

29/10/10
Ten days ago Simos put on his artificial leg (c-leg) which was bought for 37.000 euro with the contribution of the whole movement. It takes a few months until he learns how to use it perfectly.
The court case of the shooting has closed. The prosecutor was in a hurry to get rid of it... She didnt even wait for the coroners report on the amputated leg that was ordered FIVE MONTHS AGO and is delayed for an “unknown” reason (not at all unknown, we already know it...)
On the 19th and 24th of November are two trials for the same case: the seven robberies in the case of “the robbers in black”. He was sentenced for that to 7,5 years without showing up to court during the time he was outlawed. He was sentenced even for what GIANNIS DIMITRAKIS WAS FOUND INNOCENT OF. On the 19th is the trial to cancel the first trial, and on the 24th is the appeals court (if the canceling is not excepted).

Letter from the three accused of the robbery in Evia, central greece 19/10/10

At 11:20 a.m. on September 17, 2010, four people in ski masks robbed a bank at gunpoint in the small town of Psachna on the island of Evia north of Athens. A half-hour later, on a motorway road near the island’s capital Chalcis, a 27-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 35-year-old woman were arrested. They were brought to the Chalcida  police station, where the men—Alexandros Kossivas and Michalis Traikapis—were charged with the armed bank robbery and the Maria Ekonomou was charged with “aiding and abetting fugitives.” The charges were based largely on the comrades’ connection to the anarchist milieu (Traikapis was one of the Thessaloniki 7, along with two Spanish comrades and others, arrested during the riots surrounding the 2003 EU summit in that city and finally released thanks to a lengthy hunger strike) and http://saloniki2003.blogspot.com/2010/05/call-for-solidarity-with-prisoners-of.htmldubious witness testimony (one of the witnesses, a kiosk attendant, supposedly remembered one of the comrades—just prior to the robbery—asking: “Excuse me, but where is the bank?”). The comrades didn’t have any weapons or “loot” on them at the time of the arrests, while searches of their Athens homes revealed nothing more than “ski masks, four 9 mm bullets, and other objects that are being investigated.” Nevertheless, Kossivas and Traikapis are currently in prison, while the Maria was released on probation. It’s expected that they will soon write something that states their position regarding the charges, their political identity, etc.

Letter from the three accused of the robbery in Evia, central Greece
19/10/10

We are witnesses of a historical development, of a new even more devastating world that is opening in front of us. The so-called capitalistic crisis and the merciless pillage that follows it, signal a new phase of the metropolitan war and its two devastating aspects. The violence and the violence. Ideological violence, repressive violence. We speak of a new phase of war because we realize the era that preceded the crisis, equally barbarian and flattening. It was that memorable era of “plenty”, that prefaced sneakily and patiently what we live today. It was a continuous, “low intensity” war, that in two decades accomplished to extend by giving out dreams, hallucinations and ideology.
Lending, as the last “invention” for the extension of life of the developed capitalistic world, was not only the yuppies, their statistics and their numbers. It was also those. Mainly however it was the ideological promotion of the then modern way of life with loans, that penetrated, determined and transformed the total of social relations. It was the sovereign language and its commercials. It was the cynicism and the stepping over dead bodies hunting of happiness, that changed the metropolis in to immense theatres of war. The triptych of force, wealth and power, that should by any means be achieved, was glorified by all classes in all aspects of social life and un-guiltified a constant crime against the “others”. The invisible, the outcasts, the poor, the immigrants. A barbarian mass where within each one is alone and against all, could consume, exploit, manage, have fun and rape without guilts. It was the era of all is allowed. However it was borrowed and as everything, so this at some point ends.
The that rises brings with it poverty, unhappiness and prohibitions. It is the season of void that spits in the faces of those who live with hallucinations. And now what? Now that theres nothing for them to promise, they will only order. The sovereign language drips blood and the oratory with which the sweeping social transformations are promoted as an essential condition for the confrontation of the crisis, are rhetorical polemics. Direct, violent and merciless. The declaration of a “situation of emergency” and the obligation of obedience to whatever is commanded by the “national interest”, do not leave and room of misinterpretation. We have war. The state is barricading setting up an immense wall of protection around it. Because it knows that even though it still survives-the leftovers of the “plenty” of the previous decades-, even if still individualism and fatalism absorb dissatisfaction, even if still we “from under” have not constituted a compact competitive force, its not long before the moment where the accumulated rage will be expressed. And then it will explode. Even if it is a dead-end and contradictory it will explode. And the strikes will be criminalized, terrorlaws that are upgrading, the urban disturbances and the army that trained, the equipment and the budgets that are approved, the cities, the neighborhoods, the houses, our own lives that are being surrounded, prove it to us.
In this setting, prosecutions, arrests and the imprisonments of those who fight are inevitable. Because it is now that they should, by striking us, spread the fear in those that are already thinking and are ready to act, because it is now that they should demonstrate their supposed omnipotence, because it is now that they should declare as useless and impasse, every form of struggle.
We find ourselves therefore in the foresight because its what our era dictates. This may make us vulnerable and exposed, however in no case does it make us victims. Rather the opposite. This is why we speak of choices and conscience of the struggle. For the conscience that from the moment you begin to fight, you retake your life in your own hands, you cease perceiving yourself as a victim. Never again. Finally. We therefore say again, we have war. And with this fact we will recount our story.
On friday 17th of September and at a long distance away from Psahna Evia, where previously a robbery had happened in the national bank of greece in the area, cops arrest us and lead us to the artakis police station. While theres no evidence that connects us with the particular robbery, it is the verification our personal data that reveals our “identity” and gives a specific turn in events. Its our arrests that we had in the past for hostilities against the regime, that constituted the “solid” evidence for our involvement in this case. Our direct transport to the Halkida station and the insistence of the cops in the interrogations to focus on our past, were indicative of their intentions. And since our presence in the wider area of the robbery alone is not enough, the evidence had to be invented. What else therefore, than the ridiculous testimonies of some snitches-residents of the area, that “recognize” walk styles, watch brands, labels on jackets and other imaginative things that were dictated to them by the agents of halkida, struggling to fulfill the mission that was assigned to them by their superiors from g.a.d.a.(central police headquarters in athens) At this moment three of us are accused and two of us imprisoned, with an insubstantial official charge.
We could denounce the police arbitrariness against us and make pleads of innocence. However for us words are not neutral. They are charged with meanings and logics. They constitute entire worlds that are occasionally completely hostile between them. Words are therefore competing. What does it mean in our strange times to denounce arbitrariness? For us it means nothing else but an indirect faith in the monopoly of laws. A consensus admission, that arbitrariness is not in the nature of the system, but a making of certain perjurers and corrupted. It is a disorientating tactic that skillful directs the problem away from the root. To revelations, scandals, individual incidents. The system is a entirely criminal machine and violence and only violence is the oil that maintains it. Whoever still continues to ignore this, is either a suspect or turns a blind eye.
We will not be focus therefore on the cops that “exaggerated”, to the public prosecutors that “arbitraded”, in the journalists that “misinformed”. What we seek is through our own story to describe the modern terms submission. To expose to common view these small stories, that compose the total of barbarian world that surrounds us. Each one us should take a position on them. We took ours. We demand the lifting of the charges and our immediate release, without begging for nothing. We are not victims, we are a part of our choices. For all that we did, for what we didnt make, for other things that we left. No one should look for “innocents” among us. We are on the side of the repeatedely “guilty”. We are next to the poordevils, the immigrants, the outlaws, the robbers, the “terrorists”. And we will remain here.
For before, for now and for ever.

The trial of the thessaloniki 4 has been adjourned until January 14th, 2011. This was due to a situation involving one of the defendents who last week was arrested and therefore the authorities had trouble transferring him'' Michalis Traikapis'' from Athens to Thessaloniki.

The solidarity campaign continues, and we hope to inform supporters of the developing issues surrounding the trial.

Now as much as ever, as the 4 defendents will face again the greek courts in january 2011, we fully intend to participate in an international solidarity campaign. A series of benefits and infonights will be organised to further publicise this case.

On the appeal trial against the Lecce anarchists for so-called operation Nottetempo

NO BORDERS, NO NATIONS; STOP DEPORTATIONS
LOVE AND STRENGTH FOR ALL PERSECUTED PEOPLE;
FUGITIVES AND REBELS

A story already written? A few notes on the appeal trial against the Salento anarchists.

Ideas and laws, passion and social peace.
This story has often showed strong conflicts between those who expressed freely their ideas and those who attempted to repress them; between those who struggled with determination so that migrants were not locked up for not having an ID document, and those who boasted that locking up migrants was a question of security. On the one side the anarchists, on the other police, magistrates, the Church on charge of a CPT [immigration detention centre], journalists and politicians. All this, however, does not give a complete picture of what has happened and of what is still at stake.
March 2005: the CPT run by the Lecce clergy closes down for good. In the last years of its existence, hunger strikes, revolts and escapes carried out by the imprisoned immigrants have continuously occurred. Outside the CPT, a tenacious opposition by some anarchists and the protests of other groups. Meantime the violence perpetrated in the centre by his manager, priest Cesare Lodeserto, the carabinieri working with him and some of his aides becomes publicly known. Lodeserto gets arrested and later charged, among other things, with committing acts of violence and with kidnapping. The State, however, cannot put itself and its friends on trial and leave its arch-enemies free. Thus, in May 2005 some anarchists also get arrested and accused of belonging to a subversive association, whereas many others are put under investigation. After a long period of detention, four of them are charged with organized crime, three others with minor crimes and eight are acquitted. Although the sentences inflicted on them are heavy, the comrades are by then free and continue with their activity. A hush falls over the whole story, including the various legal proceedings against Lodeserto and his companions. Meantime the CPT are transformed into CIE (Identification and Deportation Centres), migrants’ boats full of desperation are immediately sent back to other concentration camps, a witch hunt against foreigners and the diverse is the strong point of the xenophobic and security-obsessed governments that follows one another on the Italian scene. The CIE become precious tools employed by power in order to contain the undesirable and to regulate, through reclusion and repression, cheap labour liable to be blackmailed (so called illegal immigrants). All this becomes routine in Lecce, until new arrivals of desperate migrants on boats bring the question back to the general attention. Certainly this is not the decisive aspect for the judges who, on December 9, will pronounce the appeal sentence towards the anarchists on trial. There is much more at stake around this trial, as proved by the way it has developed. The first judge, after postponing the sentence in a long series of hearings, has clearly demonstrated his unwillingness to go on and his intention to pass the hot potato to others. The second judge has delayed the sentence for three times, adopting pretexts quite ‘abnormal’ according to current procedures.
The reasons for all this are not easily identifiable but could be found in the prosecutor’s willingness to worsen the charges inflicted on the comrades in the first grade of the trial. If the CIE are so important for dominion, and surely they are, to charge heavily those who have struggled against them is a warning to those who intend to carry on that struggle. The CIE, however, are a thorn on the side of power because of the numerous protests breaking inside and outside them in Italy as well as in the rest of the world. The story of an ex CPT closed down forever as well as the story of a CIE in flames are not good propaganda for the State. And then there are local issues: the power and reputation of the Lecce clergy, which have been badly affected by this story; the affiliation of the same clergy with powerful national politicians (such as a high official of the Home Office); a public prosecutor seeking revenge against some lovers of freedom; the necessity to repress those who do not submit to the established rules. Is this the end of the story? We’ll see! For the moment we can only say that ‘any similarity to actual persons or events is not coincidental’, as the same circumstances and persons can be found in any story where authority clashes with the determination
of those who do not shut their eyes to oppression and injustice. This story does not only concerns the freedom of some but it also poses the question of more freedom for all.
A few anarchists

Solidarity with the Lecce anarchists

On the appeal trial against the Lecce anarchists

So-called operation Nottetempo (Night Time) started in May 2005 with a massive police deployment that led to the arrests of 5 anarchists in the Lecce province (southern Italy) and to the investigation of another ten for conspiracy. The comrades had actually been actively engaged in the struggle against the Regina Pacis immigration detention centre of San Foca (Lecce) run by the clergy, which closed down before the beginning of the infamous operation Nottetempo. The tenacious struggle of the local anarchists, in fact, had unveiled the atrocities perpetrated in that prison for immigrants to such a point that the operators of the centre could no longer hide their ignominious activity. Some of them were even put on trial and eventually went abroad, where they carried on their dirty business and managed to repair their reputation.
On the contrary, two of the arrested anarchists spent two years in prison while the others were put under house arrest or subjected to various restrictions. The first grade of the trial concluded in July 2008: as it was impossible for the jury to confirm the existence of a subversive association (article 270bis on conspiracy), they turned to article 416 of the Italian penal code and accused four comrades of forming a ‘criminal association’ (organized crime). Three other comrades were accused of specific crimes and the other eight were acquitted.
Anxious about his career and longing for promotion, public prosecutor Lino Giorgio did not resign himself to the fact that his theory of an anarchist clandestine association had been rejected by the jury. For this reason, a few weeks later, he presented an appeal against this sentence in order for another jury to confirm the accusation of conspiracy against the Lecce anarchists.
The sentence of appeal was to be finally pronounced on February 10 2010, but it has once again been postponed following the decision of the jury to examine further ‘evidence’ provided by the public prosecutor. The intention to charge the anarchists
involved in this shameful story of repression with yet more serious charges is evident, and it is also clear how the local powerful are determined to silence the entire matter as well as the violence and the abuse inflicted on immigrants by the
operators of the Regina Pacis concentration camp. If the latter no longer exists, numerous others can be found all over Italy and everywhere else; but the struggle is also alive, the struggle of those who, inside and outside these concentration camps,
believe that the only fate of these places is that of being destroyed along with the fear, hatred, indifference and racism fomented by power in order to create terror and to stir up a war among the exploited.

["what was ensured to others by some kind of a mutual good faith, for us, it is safeguarded only by fear, as our "alliance" is now based upon this fear and only, rather than any friendship", Thoukydides, Historiae G12]
“Revolutionary Struggle” armed group live-TV arrests, terror-spectacle and brutal crackdown on peaceful community resistance.
What’s happening at the moment, is the Greek state evolving its own strategy of tension, trying on the one hand to disorientate and construct a scapegoat, in the face of its own economic and political bankruptcy and the pillaging of economic and social gains from past struggles of its subjects, through which it hopes(?) to overcome it. A pillaging, that its own impotent and already “burnt” “little parrots”  are not able to guarantee the much needed consensus, and thus it could’nt be put in any other way than as obedience to the imposition of external and higher mechanisms, such as the IMF and the EU.
The sunken prestige of Greek democracy and its -neighbourhood mobster-like- bourgeoisie (setting the paradigm: “don’t mess with us” and its primitive methodology: violence and public humiliation) makes a desperate effort to get up on its knees again, by showin off military power against its most demonised enemy: the anarchists. At the same time, they are trying to put the latter one step aback, nailed in defense, maybe even hoping for some of them to engage in a military type of vendetta, already lost from the start, but mainly to paralyze radical critique, the practical critique of the streets – where our Class meets.

Beer and Revolution Archives: The Greek Insurrection audio is up!

Monday, October 11, 2010

With the debut of Beer and Revolution "Season Two" last night, featuring Anarchy Magazine contributor and editor Lawrence Jarach, it seemed like a good time to get off our asses and put up some more audio from last year's sudsy symposiums. A couple weeks ago I posted the audio to John Zerzan's presentation at last January's Beer & Rev and this week I finally got around to adding the presentation on the Greek insurrection by Sissy, Tasos and Peter (which was a big hit). Below I've embedded the first part of what was a wide-ranging and very entertaining discussion below.

The more I reflect on the Greek tour, especially having spent some time with them (and quaffed more than a few beers together here and in the Bay) and seeing their presentation twice, I think it is very likely that their visit will be remembered as one of the more remarkable and influential events in recent American anarchist history. Already I have heard the "Cops, pigs, murderers!" chant ring out at more than one anarchist action across the country. In a time where police murder seems more and more the norm, I expect to hear it a lot more. I certainly feel lucky to have had the chance to learn from our Greek comrades about their struggle.

Follow the link back to our youtube page for the rest of it (it's almost two hours total). As usual, to get the full experience, you really need to come to the event. Since it takes place in a very social atmosphere, the sound quality on the recording is not always the best, especially during the q and a. All the more reason to come out and join in the conversation yourself! While you're at our youtube page, check out the favorites section, because there's some interesting talks there that we think are worth checking out. We add to it periodically, so check back from time to time.

Last night's B&R with Lawrence drew a little more than forty people and was a raucous affair. I hope to have that online for your enjoyment in a few days if all goes well. As usual, if you're coming to town or if you're already here and have something that you think may fit in the Beer & Rev format, hit us up. Maybe we can work something out. These are irregular affairs, in that rather than stick to an arbitrary calendar, we do them when we think there's something worth talking about. As of right now, we do have another tentatively planned for March or April. We'd love to do another one (or more) before that, so hit us up if you're interested.

One of the things we want to do with Beer & Rev is to encourage the discussion of anarchist ideas and the development of critical anarchist thinking here in Phoenix, and to do it in a social way that breaks out of the stale lecture model that so often dominates the genre, as well as to challenge ourselves and our ideas. Suggestions, tips, criticisms and comments are always welcome.

Guangxi land deal protest turns violent

October 15th, 2010

October 15 2010
Violence erupted between villagers and police officers during a protest against a government plan to acquire land currently owned by residents in Cangwu county, South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Six villagers were detained.
Guangdong-based Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday that the fights occurred Wednesday as the villagers staged a protest against the land acquisition deal.
The local government said in a statement that 300 villagers gathered to show their opposition to a proposal to purchase their land. Police officers went to the scene to restore order.
The notice said the villagers damaged police cars and injured several officers.
One eyewitness was quoted as saying that a policeman’s eyeball was punched out and two dogs were beaten to death.
The report said six villagers were injured during the fight.
The local government said the land acquired would be used to store soil from a hydropower project. But the villagers said the land is slated to become a tourist attraction and used for other real estate projects.
A villager told Beijing News that the government is trying to acquire more than 600 mu of land (40 hectares) for just 41,000 yuan ($5,284) per mu. The villagers said they have not received payment yet.
Wang Cailiang, a lawyer on demolition litigations in Beijing, told the Global Times that it is illegal for the government to acquire land before compensation and replacement accommodation are provided.

Screws in Malandrino prison (high security Greek prisons) are applying new methods of extermination

Fascist methods in the general penitentiary of Malandrinou are being followed by the director Vassilios Gortzias and his agents, who are not delivering letters to the prisoners, sending them back without notifying them, using safety as a pretext when the prisoner is considered ‘dangerous'.

They allege that the prisoner himself should make an application a number of days earlier with full information about the sender, even his phone number, to the Prison Council and receive the appropriate authorisation, which means that he is obliged to know when, who and what precisely is being sent to him.

All this delirium places prohibitory restrictions on the sending of telegrams or letters, deprives communication with comrades, friends and relatives, leads to the perpetration of disciplinary offences, restricts the natural propensity to satisfy elementary needs, the contact with the rest of the world and the obvious right of free configuration of personality, free correspondence, the free communication that is in any case overshadowed  by  codes and conditions. The inviolability and facilitation of free communication and secrecy are the counterweight and  weapons that we have against the moral extermination of the prisoners.

Fight against the disastrous diversion dam of Acheloos river greece

"against the dam"
The dam and the works in Mesochora will be completed by the end of 2010. It has been completed almost 100%. The operation will begin in 2012 and will bring a profit of EUR 30,000,000. We only need to overcome the obstacle of the State Council”. This is what the Minister for the Environment declared in mid-July 2010 concerning the crime against the ecosystem of Acheloos from the pharaonic-like construction projects on the upstream and the total destruction from the attempted diversion of the river in Thessaly. They consider only the quantity of water diverted without reference to the destruction of the ecosystem of the river from its source in southern Pindos to the delta at the mouth of the Ionian Sea.
Acheloos shapes in the areas its waters run through for thousands of years a unique ecosystem with rich biodiversity in flora and fauna, which is directly dependent on its natural flow. It is a major factor in the quality of life of the communities on its banks and beyond the urban perimeter.
After the changes on the lower watercourse of Acheloos in the recent years with the creation of monstrous dams, waste disposal from small and large companies and silt, fertilizers and pesticides from industrialized agricultural production, the “boxing” of a great portion of it, ¨green¨ development of dams and the diversion of the upper reaches of the river, here they come again to complete the disaster. To give the final blow to the Acheloos, by escalating its looting
The capitalists, using as a trojan horse the ideology of “green” growth, continue their disastrous invasion, ignoring the impact on the natural environment and society. They count in euros the capital gain from the looting and prepare a new wave of attacks on nature and man.
In times of crisis of capitalism, political and economic bosses claim as a way-out the false ideology of green development, intending the continuation and deepening of the plundering of nature and society, the restructuring of state and economy under the tutelage of the EU and IMF
Although local initiatives are essential to the dynamics and evolution of this fight, their absence or decline would not mean a stop of the fight, especially since it is not a narrow local environmental issue but a central political issue.
This unprecedented attack that is already planned, will turn to disaster areas forests, mountains, lakes, seas, rivers across the country. The colonialism of capital on public land in every corner of the globe will wreak death and misery to local communities and the transnational bosses will be the ones to gain the wealth from this looting. On the one hand, the billions will accumulate and continue to be capitalized from multinational companies, while on the other hand society, immersed in the middle ages in matters of work, will produce in conditions of modern slavery all this wealth.
Today, the already existing diversion projects for Acheloos, whose completion has been stopped four times so far by the Council of State, is presented as works of “green” development. In essence, big construction companies pillage everything under the protection of the state like conquerors, giving their local fellow partners tidbits of the spoils and giving the local populations promises.
Here comes forth the contribution of the social movements and the importance of social struggle in defense of nature. Not expecting anything substantial from the institutional brokers, we are organizing from below the resistance and we are setting up our levees to stem the assault of state and capital in order to strengthen the ties of solidarity and camaraderie of those fighting and to synthesize our principles and our positions in the direction towards the comprehensive choice of breaking up with the power and antisocial requirements. Although local initiatives are essential to the dynamics and evolution of this fight, their absence or decline would not mean a stop of the fight, especially since it is not a narrow local environmental issue but a central political issue.
Understanding Acheloos as part of the natural world that was looted from the state and capital, common belief of those found from 2007 in Mesochora, was to intervene precisely where destructive activities evolve and contribute to the revival of the struggle against dams and the diversion of the river. In contrast, a logic that wants the fight to confine itself and move away from the point of dams and the diversion of the river where it was focused until now, we think it clearly constrains the fight’s potential,  becoming a disastrous choice, one step before admitting a defeat this thinking itself will lead us to.

The residents of Mesochora, since 1990 chose the dignified way of resistance, and it’s up to them to continue today. Against the local authority (mayors and prefects) and interests of the Public Electricity Company (DEI), the state and construction companies, but also beyond partisan and institutional logics that cultivate illusions – such as that the solution is the demand for the creation of a separate environment ministry – that lead to compromise, fatalism and resignation in the face of an imminent demise of the area.
From our side, seeking the radicalization, expansion and coordination of social struggle from below, we stand in solidarity alongside those who struggle collectively against the plundering of nature. And we consider our fighting presence in the area where the crime of the dams and the river diversion, as necessary and useful for the development and deployment of both the struggle to defend the Acheloos and local communities in its upper reaches, and for the protection of the natural world and society in its totality.
So, after a series of coordinated events and interventions throughout the year in Athens, Patras, Ioannina, Agrinio, Trikala, Karditsa, Larissa and other cities, we are once again for the fourth year on the banks of the Acheloos, in Mesochora in autonomous meeting for the fight.
Against the green development, the dams and the diversion of Acheloos
Against the looting of nature. Fight for Land and Freedom
Independent Meeting for the Fight
(Self-managed hangout, Agrinio / Comrades from Arta, Trikala / Initiative for the fight for Land and Freedom, from Strefi’s Hill, Athens)

3,000,000 € attack against European Space Agency research institute (Portugal)

/325.nostate.net/?p=1130
22 September 2010
Castelo Branco (Portugal): Fire in institute causes three million euros in damages
The fire that started this Wednesday at dawn in the building of the Instituto de Soldadura e Qualidade (ISQ; Welding and Quality Institute), in Castelo Branco, caused over three million euros in damages, according to its administrator Joaquim Guedelha.
The fire was ignited around 3h24 in the morning of September 8th, on the trucks parked next to the building and then spread to the institute. It was put down around 7h, as said by the chief of the fire brigade.
Joaquim Guedelha told Lusa (news agency) that the pavilion is going to be rebuilt, despite the huge damage, and maybe it’ll be ready to start functions again in three months, so that the Laboratory for Thermodynamical Trials (LABET), which is part of the ISQ, can restart its activity.
“We had several certification trials of cooling systems and transportation of perishable products going on, apart from the trials of materials we were doing for the European Space Agency (ESA)”, he said.
“The technical part of the installations is quite damaged, but the offices seem to be safe. By now it seems the project we were conducting for the ESA is safeguarded, but it’s still too soon to draw any conclusions”, said Vasco Pires.
The Castelo Branco ISQ, through its Laboratório de Ensaios Termodinâmicos (LABET), was testing the heat-resisting coating of the first ESA (European Space Agency) space shuttle.
Joaquim Guedelha underlined that the materials that were being tested are “unique, since this is the only place which is conducting these trials”.
All the materials and machinery inside the building were destroyed, but the administrator is optimistic: “we’re going to build other cooling tunnels similar to the one we had and put the machinery working, so that we can accomplish the objectives we had together with the European Space Agency”, he said.
Joaquim Guedelha also told that the ISQ will try to find temporary installations in Castelo Branco for the trials to go on until this building is rebuilt.
The Judiciary Police is investigating.

Solidarity flames for recent arrested anarchists -- Minsk, Belarus

Saturday, September 25, 2010

Two unknown people have thrown two Molotov cocktail bombs at the door of the detention center on Akrestsina Street in Minsk early on Monday, BelaPAN reports.

The door caught fire as a result of the attack at 04:23 a.m.

The city’s Maskowski district police department instituted criminal proceedings under Part Two of the Criminal Code’s Article 339 that penalizes malicious hooliganism.

It was not immediately known whether anyone was grabbed in connection with the incident. The press office of the city police department would not comment the report.

An anarchist group named Friends of Freedom claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in a statement posted on the Internet in the evening that they wanted to show solidarity with six anarchist activists arrested at the end of last week on suspicion of involvement in the August 30 fire-bomb attack on the Russian embassy in Minsk.

The six young men were arrested after an anarchist group claimed responsibility for the attack on the Russian embassy, in which a diplomat’s Mazda 3 car was burned after two glass bottles containing a flammable substance were hurled into the embassy's territory at about 10 p.m. on August 30.

The group said that the attack was in response to the Russian authorities' crackdown on activists protesting plans to build a new Moscow-St. Petersburg highway through a forest north of the Russian capital city.

Riots near U of O ‘like a war zone’

September 26th, 2010 from the signalfire.website

Sep 25
EUGENE, Ore. — Shattered glass and beer bottles litter the intersection of 13th Avenue and Ferry Street just blocks from the University of Oregon campus.
This is the scene one day after police took action against 400 college-age partiers Friday night.
“The party was just in the streets,” said student Antoine Simmons. “It was crazy. I’ve never seen that many kids in one place.”
YouTube videos have been posted by those who were there.
According to Eugene police, several residents hosted house parties on Ferry Street Friday night.  Those parties grew and eventually spilled onto the road.
Police said a sergeant on “party patrol” encountered the partiers.
“The sergeant noticed about 400 people in the street,” said Eugene Police Lieutenant Doug Mozan. “This is a huge crowd and these folks weren’t just statically standing around.”
Witnesses said it was all fun and games until people began destroying property. One neighbor said partiers started boxing on the street, breaking car windows and pulling down street signs.
All available law enforcement officers were called to the scene. Officers from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, the Springfield Police Department and Oregon State Police assisted.
According to police, the mass of people was told to scatter. However, police say the group ignored their demands.
Authorities say the rioters chanted obscenities and threw rocks, bottles and eggs at officers. That’s when officers say they deployed at least three cans of tear gas.
“It was just all over and it engulfed the area,” said student Jared Kaufer. “It was like a war zone.”
Police got the riot under control at around midnight. In a press release police said nine people were arrested.
University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere is speaking out about the riot. He says he is “deeply disappointed by the behavior displayed by the young people” and said the event is unacceptable.
It’s the worst riot in Eugene since a 2008 incident that involved about 300 people. Ironically, that incident occurred just four blocks from Friday night’s party gone bad.
