24 AND 25 AUGUST 09 SOLIDARITY ACTION IN LONDON FROM RANDOM ANARCHISTS.
ATHENS, 6 December 2008 two policemen on patrol in the
Exarchia area stop their car, walk down a pedestrian area and shoot
into a small group of young people at point blank range. A 15 year
old schoolboy, Alexandros Grigoropoulos, is struck in the heart, and
dies instantly. Immediate attempts by police and media to frame the
murdered boy according to the usual stereotypes fail miserably. Alexi
was an esteemed pupil at a private school in a wealthy suburb and
was in Exarchia by choice, a young person seeking freedom and discourse far from
videogames and the consumer culture. A choice that he paid for with his life.
Immediately the streets of Exarchia filled with angry people of all ages. During the night police
stations are attacked, banks and superstores set alight. The nearby Polytechnic university is
occupied. The rebellion spreads over the weekend and on Monday every school in Greece
comes out on strike. Hundreds of police stations all over Greece are attacked by pupils.
Town halls and colleges are occupied. The rebellion intensifies and spreads to wide strata of
the population, pupils, students, immigrants, emarginated people, unemployed workers, etc.
Athens and many other cities are in flames for over a week.
The revolt had the consensus and support of much of the population and for a few days the
State was losing its legitimacy. Police were repelled from the areas under attack, and resorted
to random arrests based on spurious charges. Out of hundreds of thousands of rebels all over
Greece, 65 people were imprisoned, charged with various misdemeanors.
Today one person remains in prison, Thodoris Iliopoulos, 31 years old. He has not been tried
but remains in custody, exemplary hostage of State vengeance in a grotesque parody of
justice.
He is the last prisoner of the December insurrection.
After 47 days on hunger strike, Thodoris breathes and talks with difficulty, but his courage is
still high. Here are some words he managed to send to "Avgi":
"Why bow your head? Maybe to see two legs that regularly lose their balance over the tomb
they have prepared for you? Keep your courage and some day the Sun will rise for us as
well."
In Greece, in the theatre of life, hundreds of thousands of people turned a tragic murder into a
rebellion for life, for their lives, against a system of death in all its forms.
