Experimental GM corn field sabotaged in Badajoz

thisisourjob.wordpress.com/2010/10/09/experimental-gm-corn-field-sabotaged-in-badajoz/

9 10 2010 From Culmine (October 8, 2010):
We claim responsibility for the sabotage of an experimental field of genetically modified corn in Badajoz province. On Sunday, September 19, several people sabotaged a crop of genetically modified corn—designated type SF1035T and related to another variety already being sold by Monsanto—owned by Fitto Seeds in Guareña municipality, Bajadoz.
This action is a small response to the imposition of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) by biotechnology corporations and the Spanish state.
Ever since massive GMO experimentation, approval, and marketing began, the creators and developers of GMOs have been declaring that they would be capable of ending hunger and safeguarding the health of humanity, possibly ushering in a cleaner, more efficient agriculture. Nothing could be further from reality.
The imposition of GMOs is taking place in the context of enormous transnational corporations fighting for monopolistic control of seeds and chemical fertilizers, monoculture, genetic contamination, the elimination of the small and medium-sized farmer, the liquidation of local economies, the disappearance of indigenous seed varieties, huge distribution networks, the pollution of water supplies with toxic waste, and the disintegration of rural communities. In short, the context of the capitalist model.
GMOs are incompatible with other forms of production and social organization based on restoring a more traditional agriculture that satisfies the needs of populations instead of markets, doesn’t exceed the limits of ecosystems, and aims to rid itself of the illusion of associating happiness with consumption.
Such models are particularly needed in a world gripped by starvation and global warming caused by the planet’s submission to the market and state totalitarianism.
Therefore, GMOs have not managed to fulfill the goodness they were said to be capable of. Instead, they represent another turn of the screw in the agroindustrial model, which envisions the total expropriation of people’s capacity to feed themselves.
For final decisions regarding the approval and subsequent marketing of GMOs, the Spanish state created the National Biosecurity Commission (CNB), leaving regulation in its hands.
Within the CNB there are seven scientific representatives, many of whom have ties to the biotechnology industry and the pro-GMO lobby. This scientific bloc calls the shots within the CNB, whose duty is to industry, not biosecurity. Proof of this can be found in the growing number of cases of genetic contamination in wheat and corn crops. In entire regions of the Spanish state, the genetic contamination of crops like these has been ensured.
Beyond our frontiers, GMOs have been responsible for all kinds of disasters, like famines, deforestations, poisonings, allergies, and other pathologies stemming from their consumption, as well countless instances of coercion against rural farming communities by biotechnology corporations. And let’s not forget the genuine massacres that have arisen from the manufacture and use of the chemical fertilizers needed by the agroindustrial model, of which GMOs are the latest expression.
Saying no to GMOs means saying no to the aforementioned evils and injustices, saying no to imposition, saying no to the artificialization of life, and saying no to a fool’s progress.
Taking action against GMOs is a legitimate people’s struggle, as well as a sign of common sense and the need for profound social change. It is the fruit of being conscious of how dangerous it is (and how much is at stake) when the Earth is in the hands of capitalism. Whoever sows and promotes GMOs will reap resistance.

Barcelona - One hundred young people attack Europe Bookstore and a Burger king

Wednesday, 29 September 2010

translated from culmine

press of the state / capital, 9/29/1910 - One hundred hooded youths took advantage of the ferment in the centre of Barcelona general strike to cause serious incidents in a day that, until noon, had lived in relative calm. Around 12.00 a hundred youths with black flags broke into the controversial Europe Bookstore, known for the distribution and sale of material connected with Nazism, plundering and destroying the interior. Located on Seneca Street, near the Diagonal, the bookshop suffered an attack that ended with the destruction and abandonment on the street of the material with which they work, including books, statues, flags and even an electrical appliance.
The demonstrators then left in the direction of Rambla Catalunya before the astonished gaze of the neighbours. Before leaving they left a tag painted on the door of the establishment that read 'fora feixistas' (fascists out) and 'bastards'.
Shops vandalized in Rambla Catalunya
A group of about 40 masked persons, on the other hand, were involved in several incidents during their tour of Rambla Catalunya. There they devoted themselves to smashing windows of the shops that remained open, and upturning rubbish containers.
One business that was left worse off in the vandalism was an establishment of the hamburger chain Burger King, whose window was completely shattered.

Tonight, there have been several acts of sabotage in solidarity with the anarchist prisoners imprisoned in August in Chile.
- A digger on fire in the south of Madrid.
- Windows of police training academy in the area of Atocha attacked with a hammer.
- A Peugeot dealership in the Embajadores area attacked with a hammer.
Each of the 3 actions was signed with the words "Solidarity with the prisoners in Chile". Because we are tired of this life that has become artificial, where we are told how we should live, because solidarity is something more than words alone.
Immediate freedom for the anarchists in Chile!
Immediate restitution of the Mapuche lands to their people!
Freedom for Silvia Guerini, Luca Bernasconi, Costantino Ragusa, Marco Camenisch!

Spain General strike action in Almeria and Mojacar areas and barcelona madrit!

A general strike is taking place throughout Spain today aginst the so-called "austerity measures" imposed by the government and capital. Since midnight piquets, blockades, actions and demonstrations are taking place all over the Spanish State. The strike is planned to last for 24h until midnight tonight..

29 settembre 2010
sciopero generale in spagna
picchetti, cortei, scontri…
pietre e fuoco!!

UPDATE:  In the east of Almeria Province – the Mojacar area – the morning of the national strike appears to have started without reported incidents. Pickets have not yet been spotted in the area and for all intense and purposes it is business as usual. Schools, banks. Petrol stations and supermarkets contacted were all open.
Meanwhile this morning, unions declared the 24-hour general strike in Almeria City as a resounding success. They claim 90% of businesses were shut, although in the early hours of the morning this was probably true.
At the strike of midnight 100 picketers barricaded the exit gates of the Almeria bus station to stop buses leaving. Ten minutes later 50 riot police dispersed the crowd and with some remaining at the station on guard.
At 6am a picket of about 40 people closed access to Almeria Port, although from 9am it reopened and is now reported as operating with about 30% of the workforce having joined the strike.
Municipal rubbish collection did not take place.
Almeria fire services have attended a dozen incidents of burning rubbish containers and tyres across the city.
Pickets also stopped access to several retail parks and industrial estates although this was before most of the businesses were due to open.
Nationally, the government assures minimum public transport services are in operation. Electricity consumption in Spain this morning dropped by 19% compared to the normal amount, attributed to the strike.
Clashes with police have been reported in Barcelona, Alicante and Vigo.+
Unions say construction and metal industries have seen a 100% participation with the strike.

Euro-demonstration against austerity measures

2010-09-29

BRUSSELS, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) — Around 100,000 people are expected to gather in Brussels on Wednesday for a key part of Europe-wide demonstration against austerity measures.
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) called for a European Day of Action on Wednesday to demonstrate against the austerity measures adopted recently by many European countries and to ask for recovery plans promoting quality jobs and growth.
As many countries have been badly hit by the global financial and economic crisis, European authorities have decided to implement drastic budget measures and social reforms, such as Greece’s austerity plan or France’s pension reform.
Between 80,000 and 100,000 members of fifty Trade Unions organizations from 30 countries are expected to take part in the demonstration held on Wednesday in Brussels.
After the demonstration, an ETUC delegation is expected to meet European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, whose country ensures the rotating Presidency of the European Union.
Besides the Euro-demonstration in Brussels, a general strike has been called in Spain for the first time in 8 years. Actions and demonstration movements will also take place on Wednesday in other European countries, namely Portugal, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Serbia, Romania, Poland , Ireland and France.

MINERS STRIKE IN LEON AND ASTURIAS (SPAIN)

  • MINER STRIKES AND RIOTS IN "LA MAGDALENA" (LEON-SPAIN)‏

MINEROS de león [vs] ANTIDISTURBIOS [2010] [News GCN]

 14/09/2010

The miners of Ponferrada (Castilla-Leon) and Asturias have been fighting the riot police and blocking roads last week. The reason is very simple; they have not been paid for the last 2 months and the bosses are threatening with closing the pits due to their alleged "low productivity".

For the time being 36 riot cops have ended up in hospital (yes, it can be done sometimes).

All this is happening just a few days before the national general strike that will take place on 29th September.

LET'S SPREAD THE SEEDS OF SOCIAL REVOLUTION.

2 GM Maize trials trashed in Catalonia, Spain

Today, 12th July 2010, dozens of people came together to sabotage two experimental GM Maize trials belonging to Syngenta, located in the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí (Baix Empordà, Girona, Catalunya).

We destroyed Syngenta's open-air genetic experiment because we understand that this kind of direct action is the best way to respond to the fait accompli policy through which the Generalitat, the State and the bio-tech multinationals have been unilaterally imposing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our agriculture and our food.

The Spanish State, with more than 75,000 hectares sown in 2009, represents a concentration of approximately 80% of the surface area of GMOs harvested in Europe. After Aragon, Catalonia is the area of Europe that harvests the largest area of GMOs, around 27,000 hectares. In recent years, 42% of the experimental GMO field trials in the EU have been planted in the Spanish State.

Syngenta are the third largest seed corporation in the world (after Monsanto and Dupont). Their objective is to gain a monopoly domination of the global seed market so that all farmers and all agricultural production on the planet depends on their seed sales. Syngenta, and other transnational corporations (TNCs) that control a) the global market in agricultural goods (seeds, fertilizers, agro-chemicals...) , b) the circuits for the distribution and commercialization of food and agricultural raw materials, and c) the global market in final products, is one of the principal promoters and beneficiaries of the corporate industrial model that currently dominates. After having been imposed for decades on a planetary scale, more and more voices indicate that 1) this devastating social and productive model is one of the principal causes of the food, ecological and climate crises that humanity currently faces, and 2) genetically modified crops represent a new turn of the screw of the agro-industrial model, which does nothing more than deepen the devastating social, cultural and environmental impacts associated with transnational agro-business.

According to European legislation, experimental GMO field trials represent an indispensable intermediate step in gaining EEC approval to grow and harvest as yet unauthorized varieties of genetically modified crops in the EU. Many groups in Europe have for years condemned the protocol that the bio-tech transnationals must follow to gain approval for their genetically modified seeds, as being full of irregularities and pit falls. Among these, the most notable are the various scandals that have hit the European food security Agency, (EFSA) which have made it quite clear that this supposedly scientific body is in the pay of the genetics industry. On the other hand, it is important to uncover the role of the EEC itself in the underhand promotion of GM crops by the EEC itself.

Twelve years since GM maize crops were first planted in Catalonia, the appearance of dozens of cases of genetic contamination of organic and conventional agricultural products (contamination of seed batches, fields, animal feeds and products destined for human consumption) has repeatedly demonstrated that the supposed coexistence between GM and non-GM crops is totally impossible and undesirable. The proliferation of genetically modified agriculture in our territory has led to the extinction of a number of varieties of traditional wheat (“morat” and “del queixal”) and a reduction of 95% in the cultivation of organic maize between 2002 and 2008.

All this leads unequivocally to the conclusion that GM agriculture makes it impossible to develop and consolidate social models and models of production, distribution and consumption that differ from the dominant model, based on agro-ecology and the struggle for peoples' food sovereignty. Because of this, we fundamentally reject both GM crops and the techno-industrial capitalist society that makes them possible and necessary (… necessary to ensure that the powerful few consolidate their domination of the global population, and perfect the business strategies). We therefore call for people to take the step to action to destroy their genetically modified crops and the social order perpetuated by those that promote them.

Barcelona: Notes on the european squat meeting (17-20 june 2010)

Translation of an article written in french and originally published on squat.net/fr

From june 17th to 20th, 2010, an european squat meeting took place in Barcelona...
People participating to the discussions were more than one hundred, all the discussions happened in the Laforsa squatted social centre (41 av. de la Fama, in Cornellà de Llobregat, suburbs of Barcelona). This old factory is squatted for a year now, but it's quite famous because it has been occupied during several months by its own workers in the late seventies, becoming a symbol of the workers autonomous class struggle.
The discussions were happening in the huge Laforsa's first floor (with plugged simultaneous translations in spanish, english, french and italian) and food was served twice a day in the second floor.
Each day was focused on one topic (thursday: presentation of the present squats and debate about the controversial question of legalization, friday: the possibilities of resistance against squats evictions - with the stories of Hamsa, Ateneu Korneya and Kasa de la Muntanya in Barcelona, Maintzer strasse in Berlin, Ungdomshuset in Copenhagen, Casablanca in Madrid, the 400 couverts in Grenoble, etc. saturday: demonstration in the city, then discussions about squatting as a mean for struggle - with the inspiring example of Cabanyal quarter in Valencia, and against prison - with some ex-prisoners, in particular Amadeu Casellas, sunday: social control and identification methods, especially DNA - with a barcelona's lawyer who's near the okupa movement, the presentation of the squat!net website and the tools it offers).

The bigger part of the discussions were focused on the presentation of the situations in the different countries or cities... Actually there were squatters from several countries (Catalunya, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain, Denmark, Poland, Netherlands, Sweden, etc.) and the squat's practices plus the State repression are sometimes quite different from a country to another.
Because of that, we learnt a lot, but we had difficulties to go further on the topics.
Other meetings like that could be relevant... Some squatters from Barcelona said they should renew their intersquat dynamics, which are a bit dead for a few years.

In the next days or the next months:
- Monars (Catalunya): Rural squat meeting from july 1st to 4th
- Toulouse (Fr): Pilifest, "Squat and autonomy", from july 3rd to 7th
- Dijon: Summerfest in the autonomous centre "Les Tanneries", from july 16th to 24th
- Berlin: Intersquat festival from september 10th to 19th

***

Dozens of squats are active in Barcelona, not only the CSO Laforsa, we also could talk about la Rimaia, la Otra Carboner? and Barrilonia who are siatuated down'town and make a lot of activities (library, cyber-cafe, restaurant, parties, etc.) with big banners and paintings on their outside walls. And tons of other squats are active too, Barcelona stays the most important city in Europe talking about "political" squats.

On saturday june 19th, a breakfast-gathering under the sun was called for 10am in Vallcarca, a quarter where several old houses are squatted and where squats opening and closing are quite often these last years... Gentrification in the quarter sounds "normal" because of the touristy Güell park and so on... But in the same quarter you can find big squats like Kasa de la Muntanya and Blokes Fantasma.

Around 12:30am, the demonstration begins (250-300 people), accross Vallcarca, then in direction of Gracia, to end in Joanic place. During the demo, very numerous direct actions happened. A great collective energy was going on, and the cops were only a few, quite timid (before the beginning, people were quite unsure about the situation, because in may 2007, during the last intersquat demo in Barcelona, the cops closed the demo and fights between cops and squatters were severe, with some injured people... Alfonso, who hurt a cop that was beating up squatters, has been judged only a few weeks ago and has been condemned for three years in prison!).
First, a re-opening of a squat is made in Vallcarca, (the fifth re-opening in Vallcarca in only a few months), some masked people destroyed a wall with sledgehammers and immediately re-occupied the house!
During most of the actions that needed to make stop the demo for a few minutes, someone was taking in a megaphon to explain what's the idea of the action. Quite a lot of people in the streets listened...
In the front of the demonstration, banners were arranged in a U shape to protect the demo from possible police assaults. Slogans we shouted very often, in catalan and in spanish (for example "okupa tu tambien", "okupa y resiste", "policia torturadors i asesinos", which mean "you can squat too", "squat and resist", "police tortures and kills"). Some slogans also have been shouted in english and in french.

Dozens and dozens of graffitis have been made, some posters have been glued as well. Several banks have attacked by painted stuff (paint-bombs, graffitis and paint throws), some surveillance video-cameras have been damaged (broken or spray-painted), some banners have been put on different buildings (in particular ex-squats). The advertisment boards of a building site for the new metro line have been spray-painted and/or taken off, one part of the boards has been used as a symbolic barricade just behind the demo. Plaça de les dones del 1936 (1936 women's place), an institutional building has a window smashed (against gentrification).
On the Gracia's town hall place, the official building is protected by some police trucks, which are protected by more or less twenty anti-riot cops. Those cops are attacked by paint throws and by some projectiles. In the place, a huge squat' symbol is painted on the ground.

The demonstration ends in a cool mood on Joanic place, that is spray-painted as well.
This intersquat' demonstration makes an echo to the ones that happened in march in Toulouse, in Grenoble and in Poznan.

Dear comrades

On the occasion of the European Summit, celebrated in the Spanish State due to the rotating presidency of the EU, an anticapitalist and antiauthoritarian group has decided not to remain silent in view of the provocations the power in charge of the world crisis has implemented. We are ready to denounce the hypocrisy and the falsity of those who govern and to make hear the voice of the oppressed ones by any means necessary.

During this June, leaders of different countries will come to Barcelona, among them members of the European Union or other states, such as Israel and Egypt, in order to treat topics like immigration, energy, trading, social control, tourism… This set of meetings does not have any other goal than to consolidate their power and manage the economic crisis inherent in the capitalist system to support the social peace.

From this anticapitalist group, we would like to make an international call so everybody who has the chance could come to Barcelona between May, the 29th and June, the 7th in order to fight the established powers and break the silence of the social peace.

During these days, it has been organized a set of acts, mobilizations and talks which make an anti-summit days, reflecting on immigration, social control, etc, topics appeared in the official summit but the other way round, dealing with the autonomous, libertarian and combative point of view. From this group we invite all comrades to join the efforts and organize themselves against the established system.

Salute and keep on fighting!

Benvolgudes companyes
